What is Gala?

Gala Games is an elaborate gaming ecosystem where players gain true ownership of in-game assets and a voice in the decentralized gaming community. It offers a range of P2E games and an NFT marketplace.

Since the project’s launch in 2020, the Ethereum based GALA token (the native crypto which powers the ecosytem) has recorded sustained growth despite the volatility of the crypto market. For perspective, it is up more than 50% year-on-year and about 3,100% since launch.

What to look for while selecting a Gala wallet

There are several considerations to make when it comes to selecting a crypto wallet to store your Gala safely and accessibly. Here is what to look for in your ideal Gala wallet:

The priority for any wallet should be its security. You should seek a provider that offers robust security measures, including strong encryption, two-factor authentication, and, if possible, support for hardware wallets. Wallets that store your private keys offline, i.e., in cold storage, are generally safer than those that keep them online (hot wallet). Check out our crypto hot wallet vs. cold wallet guide for more insight.

User experience

A user-friendly interface is critical, especially if you are relatively new to crypto. A well-designed wallet should provide simple navigation, clear guidance, and excellent customer support. A good Gala wallet should make sending, receiving, and managing GALA comfortable without requiring expertise or prior experience in crypto.

Backup & recovery

Make sure that the Gala provider offers secure backup and recovery options in case you lose access to your wallet, or it’s otherwise compromised. Most wallets in 2024 offer seed phrases or recovery keys that enable wallet restoration and access to your funds.

Community & reviews

Search for trusted reviews on Gala wallets issued by the crypto community. Top-rated wallets with many users are generally more reliable and trustworthy. Make sure to use a wallet with verified user feedback and ratings.

Development & support

A regularly updated and maintained wallet ensures the best level of security and functionality. Look for Gala wallets with active development teams and regular updates that address security vulnerabilities and enhance features. You could also try posing some queries to customer support to determine their responsiveness and helpfulness.

Taking these factors into account will help you make an informed choice and find a suitable Gala wallet to store your GALA stash securely and conveniently.

Pros of using self-custodial wallets to store Gala

Crypto Self Custody
  • Full control: You are in complete control of your private keys and funds, meaning no one can access your GALA tokens without your consent.
  • Enhanced security: Self-custodial wallets, particularly hardware wallets, have advanced security features such as offline storage, preventing online hacks and breaches.
  • Privacy: Self-custodial wallets usually do not require personal information, thus giving you a higher degree of anonymity and privacy.
  • No third-party risk: Holding the private keys eliminates the chances of losing your funds due to a third-party service being compromised or going down.
  • Direct transactions: You can interact directly with the blockchain from a self-custodial wallet. This facilitates quick and less costly transactions without having to rely on intermediaries.
  • Flexibility: A self-custodial wallet allows you to access most decentralized applications directly from the wallet, which in turn, gives you more freedom on how you use your GALA tokens.
  • Customization: Many self-custodial wallets have multiple settings enabling you to customize the wallet to your preference.

Cons of using self-custodial wallets to store Gala

  • Responsibility: You are solely responsible for managing and safeguarding your private keys. Losing your keys means losing access to your GALA tokens permanently.
  • Complexity: Self-custodial wallets can be more complex to set up and use, especially for beginners who are new to cryptocurrency.
  • No/little customer support: Unlike custodial wallets, there’s often little customer support to help recover lost keys or assist with other issues, placing all the accountability on you.
  • Security risks: While generally more secure, self-custodial wallets can still be vulnerable to physical theft, malware, or phishing attacks if proper precautions are not taken.
  • Backup necessity: Regularly backing up your wallet is essential. Failing to do so can result in the loss of your GALA tokens if your device fails or is lost (or if you lose your key).
  • Limited features: Some self-custodial wallets might lack advanced features offered by custodial wallets or exchanges, such as integrated trading platforms or staking services.

How to create a Gala (GALA) wallet

Now we’ve covered the ins and outs of the top Gala wallets in 2024, here’s some insight into how to set one up. For this demonstration, we’ve used Exodus. Note that the process is similar regardless of the wallet you eventually choose.

1. Download and install Exodus

Go to the official Exodus website to download the wallet. Exodus is available for desktop and mobile devices. Select the version compatible with your device (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android). Download the installation file and follow the on-screen instructions to install Exodus on your device.

For demonstration, we are using Exodus desktop wallet (Windows 64bit). Note that the steps from here on may vary slightly depending on the device you install it on.

2. Set up your Exodus Wallet

The first thing you should ideally do after installing Exodus Wallet is to secure it with a password and secret recovery phrase. To do this, you have to go to Settings (on the upper right corner of the interface) > Backup (as show in the screenshot below).

set up your exodus wallet

Choose a strong password — preferably one that you haven’t used anywhere else. Once you enter the password, you will be prompted to re-enter it on the next step, following which, you will be given your secret recovery phrase.

recover phrase

Write down your 12-word recovery phrase and store it in a safe place. This phrase will allow you to recover your wallet if you lose access to your device. Remember, losing this recovery phrase or someone else gaining access to it could lead you to irretrievably lose your funds.

3. Add GALA to your wallet

On the home page of the app, you will be given three options:

  • Option 1: Deposit crypto from another wallet
  • Option 2: Buy new crypto using the wallet’s built-in exchange
  • Option 3: Import an existing wallet.
start your journey

For the first option, you just click on the “Make your first deposit” button, select your favorite crypto from the list of available options (GALA in our case) and hit enter. Use the search box to find the crypto of your choice as shown in the screenshot below.

Up next, you will be shown your GALA wallet address along with the corresponding QR code. Proceed with the deposit by sending GALA using either the address or the QR code.

We can ignore the second option because Exodus doesn’t yet support buying GALA with fiat.

As for the third option, it is applicable only if you already have an Exodus wallet. In that case, you can simply import that wallet to your newly installed Exodus app using the recovery phrase for that existing wallet (the one you are importing).

Which Gala wallet is the best?

Each of the listed wallets comes with its own merits and limitations. For instance, Ledger offers top-notch security as a cold hardware wallet. Coinbase Wallet provides the liquidity and trust associated with the Coinbase exchange. Exodus delivers a secure, multi-platform wallet with a built-in exchange. YouHodler gives you access to additional financial services. Last but not least, Trust Wallet stands out with its built-in DApp browser and support for a wide variety of cryptocurrencies, the highest among all five.

Weigh your options carefully by understanding their unique features and limitations to make sure you are choosing the best GALA wallet that meets your specific requirements.
