Altcoins are all cryptocurrencies and digital assets which are not Bitcoin (BTC). The term is an abbreviation of “alternative to Bitcoin” and can be attached to such major market players as Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Cardano (ADA), TRON (TRX), and everything else. Controversially, the term “altcoin” can also be attached to Bitcoin Cash (BCH), though BCH proponents prefer to think of the forked-version of Bitcoin as ‘the real Bitcoin.’ As such, Bitcoin Cash fans often do not think of their preferred coin as an altcoin. Altcoins are notoriously more volatile than Bitcoin (BTC), and often follow the market leader in dramatic fashion. When the price of BTC rises, so too does the price of most altcoins. Conversely, when the price of BTC declines, so too does the price of most altcoins. This attributes a greater level of risk to altcoin trading — though it also implies the potential for greater rewards.
