Rappers Snoop Dogg and Eminem performed their latest single “From The D 2 The LBC” as Bored Ape avatars during MTV’s Video Music Awards this Sunday.

The performance spliced a live performance in front of the VMA audience with animated segments inside the metaverse.

Inside the Otherside

Yuga Labs, the company behind Bored Apes Yacht Club, is currently developing its first metaverse game dubbed ‘Otherside.’ At present, Otherside remains in its development phase and no official release date has been offered.

Until the VMAs, very few had experienced what Otherside may offer upon its release. Only developers and owners of Otherdeed land NFTs had been able to experience an alternate reality.

Sunday’s VMA performance began with Snoop Dogg smoking a comically oversized joint and Eminem suffering the ill effects of the secondhand smoke. From here the two fell down the rabbit hole to the Otherside metaverse. The two performed variously from the top of an MTV logo, from the roof of a high-rise building, and upon a triangular stage that doubled as an oversized video screen.

Other features of the Otherside were floating pieces of land reminiscent of James Cameron’s Pandora from the Avatar film series. Whether some or all of these features will make it through to the final Otherside metaverse which users can experience remains to be seen.

A huge global audience

The VMAs is one of the most widely watched television events in the world. According to figures released by MTV the show’s global viewership more than tops the billion mark, with viewership at 1.33 billion in 2021.

Meanwhile the music video for “From The D 2 The LBC” has accumulated 37.5 million views.

Both the music video and the live metaverse performance of the track feature Apes owned by Snoop Dogg and Eminem respectively.
