Meta is set to launch its microblogging app Threads on Thursday. The launch comes at a time when Twitter users are abandoning the platform en masse due to strict new rules.

Tech giant Meta is set to upend the microblogging space with the launch of its app called ‘Threads.’ According to The Wall Street Journal, the highly anticipated release is scheduled for Thursday, and numerous analysts predict that the new app will present a significant challenge to Twitter.

Meta Threads Microblogging App Arrives on Thursday

Meta’s Threads is sure to make a splash in the market and hopes to take advantage of the distaste of Twitter’s new rules. Since Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, there have been a number of issues on the platform.

As a result, users have grown increasingly disgruntled.

An iOS App Store listing for Threads has also appeared, as has one on the Google Play app store. The official description for the app reads,

“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow…you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”

The app is an Instagram-based text app. Its connection with Meta’s other platforms gives it significant clout. Unsurprisingly, the App Store listing shows that the app collects personal data from Health & Fitness to Browsing History and Contact Info to Search History.

Meta has itself been facing a tough time in the past 12 months, and a potential success with Threads may offer some relief.

Rumors about the Threads app have been circulating for a long time, with reports appearing last year that it was testing related features. It even conducted tests with some public figures.

Meta’s Threads app may serve as a Twitter alternative, but it lacks decentralization, making it susceptible to censorship. On the other hand, Mastodon offers a decentralized alternative to Twitter. Some reports have even suggested that the app is a decentralized Twitter alternative that will be compatible with Mastodon. In any case, it won’t be long before the public discovers the full details of the app.

Twitter’s New Rules Spur Exodus to Other Platforms

Twitter’s new rules have led to many users leaving the platform for decentralized social media alternatives. Among the changes that have spurred the migration is the fact that there is a limit to the number of tweets users can read, as well as the need to log in to see tweets.

Alternatives like Mastodon, Damus, and now Meta’s Threads have benefited from these changes. BlueSky, for instance, has seen a large number of signups. They have all been dubbed Twitter killers, but it remains to be seen which of them will come out on top.
