After investing billions in the metaverse, Meta now plans to disrupt the dominance of OpenAI’s ChatGPT through its own open-sourced model.

Google and OpenAI are leading the race of generative AI with their chatbots, Bard and ChatGPT. But now Meta has stepped up to the plate with plans to disrupt the duopoly.

Meta Plans Commercial Version of AI Model

According to the Financial Times, Meta is working on a commercial version of its AI model that will allow customization for businesses. Earlier this year, Meta revealed its language model, LLaMA, but it was limited to researchers only.

Now, three people familiar with the matter told FT that Meta would release a new version for a wider audience. One of the people said:

“The goal is to diminish the current dominance of OpenAI.”

Open-Source Model For Competitive Advantage?

Meta’s AI model is expected to be open-source, allowing developers to view and build on top of the source code.

This gives a slight competitive advantage against OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is a closed-source model for now. However, OpenAI also plans to release a new open-source model amid rising competition.

Speaking at a conference in Aix-en-Provence, France, last Saturday, Yann LeCun, the Chief AI Scientist at Meta, said:

“The competitive landscape of AI is going to completely change in the coming months, in the coming weeks maybe, when there will be open source platforms that are actually as good as the ones that are not.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Elon Musk announced xAI, a new independent venture to compete with OpenAI.
