A series of Undertaker-themed non-fungible tokens are scheduled to drop this Saturday, ahead of Wrestlemania 37, introduced as a new type of memorabilia for fans of the retired Pro Wrestler.
Declared as a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity,’ the WWE announced their first-ever NFTs with the legendary wrestler, The Undertaker as the theme.
The Undertaker, otherwise known as Mark Calaway, retired from professional wrestling in November 2020 – 33 years after his debut. The Undertaker’s main traits are his gothic horror and supernatural-themed persona.
He accumulated many titles during his career, including three-time World Heavyweight Champion and maintaining the longest unmatched winning streak at Wrestlemania, with twenty-one wins and zero losses.
WWE celebrates Undertaker’s legacy
The NFTs are launched a year after the wrestler’s retirement. They comprise a four-tier system: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Fan rewards within each tier will celebrate the wrestler’s legacy and increase fan engagement.
The highest bidder for the Platinum category will receive two front-row tickets to either WrestleMania 38 in 2022 or 39 in 2023. They will also receive VIP access, accommodation, and a personalized video from The Undertaker himself.
Triple H, former WWE Wrestling Superstar, and current WWE Executive Vice President, had previously discussed the integration of NFT’s during an interview with Jeremy Lambert of Fightful.com. He discussed the potential of the concept within the sport but was unsure about its implementation, stating that:
“Those are things, as technology changes and those opportunities become available, it’s always things that we’re looking at.”
Nick Khan, the WWE President and Chief Revenue Officer, has stated that the NFTs present fans with ‘an opportunity to own a digital piece of history featuring The Undertaker, one of the most iconic Superstars in sports entertainment’. The advertisement of such memorabilia is apt considering the non-interchangeable nature of NFT’s.
The NFTs will be available for purchase in two installments for each tier, between April 10th and 11th. Each tier has a different starting price, with Platinum bids starting at $10,000, to Bronze which starts at $100. The first drop begins at 10:30 AM ET on Saturday 10th of April, starting with the Platinum tier. It will run for 37 hours alongside WrestleMania 37, which occurs at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
