TIME Magazine included co-founder and current leader of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, in its list of this year’s most influential people.

Former executive chairman of Reddit Alexis Ohanian composed the write-up featured in this year’s issue. Not only did Ohanian reflect with some personal pride at Buterin’s development, but also emphasized how his accomplishments are enabling newfound potential.

Ohanian’s praise

Ohanian began by reflecting on Buterin’s growth with pride, having followed his career early on via Reddit’s r/Ethereum community. He then rattles off some of Buterin’s higher profile achievements. These include Ethereum’s $400 billion market cap, the development of decentralized apps (dApps), and the boom in non-fungible tokens (NFTs). However, to Ohanian these seem somewhat beside the point.

“What makes Vitalik so special, though, is that he is a builder’s builder,” Ohanian writes. “No one person could’ve possibly come up with all of the uses for Ethereum, but it did take one person’s idea to get it started.”

Ohanian continues that all the ways Ethereum is enabling new ways of leveraging blockchain technology has opened up a new world. He cites projects such as “Sorare reinventing fantasy sports or Rainbow users showing off their NFT collections.” The former Reddit executive chair concluded by saying that Buterin was the reason, “I’ve never been more excited about the potential of the Internet.”

TIME and Crypto

Featuring the cryptocurrency entrepreneur on its editorial list is the latest in the magazine’s interaction with the digital assets. Last month, Ethereum-based NFT project Cool Cats announced a collaboration with TIME, apparently at the behest of its President Keith A. Grossman. Earlier this year, TIME partnered with Crypto.com to become the first popular magazine to accept cryptocurrency as a payment method for subscriptions.

TIME also became a trend-setter among institutional companies, soliciting for a Chief Financial Officer who had ‘comfort with Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.’ The magazine had also released several iconic magazine covers as NFTs.
