There has been a slew of big brand name companies filing for Metaverse trademarks in recent months but the U.S. Air Force has taken things a step further with its latest application.
According to licensed trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, the United States Air Force has filed a trademark application for a “Spaceverse.”
In a tweet on April 19, the trademark expert reported that the concept converges terrestrial and space physical and digital realities. Additionally, it will provide extended-reality training, testing, and operations environments.
The application was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on April 14, 2022.
Into the Spaceverse
Details are thin on the ground at the moment, but the USPTO description claims that the Spaceverse will be a “secure digital Metaverse.” It is likely to include a virtual testing and training environment for USAF pilots and will be a closed system.
It was not clear whether the Spaceverse would be connected to the United States Space Force (USSF), a space service branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. The USSF military service was founded in 2019 to organize, train, and equip space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space.
The number of Metaverse and nonfungible token-related trademark applications has skyrocketed over the past six months or so. The USPTO reported that in 2021, it received 1,263 applications for NFT trademarks, 421 times more than in 2020.
In addition to the USAF’s mystery Spaceforce trademark application, Kondoudis reported that the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) filed a trademark application for CBOE DIGITAL on the same day.
The leading exchange and trading platform wants to trademark services for NFT-backed digital assets, marketplaces, and exchanges for crypto and digital assets according to the filing.
Metaverse trademark applications surge
The USAF joins a long list of companies seeking trademarks for Metaverse-related patents. Anheuser-Busch is one of the most recent with a filing for new trademark applications for a “Budverse”.
The firm is angling for NFT-backed media, Metaverse, and augmented reality marketplaces for NFT goods including its range of beverages which include Budweiser, Stella Artois, and Michelob.
Last week, UPS filed applications for Metaverse trademarks covering virtual clothing, packages, parcels, labels, bar codes, and sports collectibles. Earlier this month, financial services and credit card giant MasterCard filed for 15 Metaverse and NFT trademark applications.
Meanwhile, McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s have also made moves to register their own brands in the Metaverse this year.
