The UK government plans to canvas the British media industry over its growing fears and concerns about the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).
Governments are racing to become the hub of rising technology like AI and blockchain. While the British government is ambitious about AI goals, the media industry is concerned with copyright infringement.
UK Government Plans to Publish AI Regulation White Paper
According to the Financial Times, the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sports (DCMS) has addressed the concerns of the creative industry through a letter. The DCMS also promised to include the media industry’s problems in the broader policymaking debates.
It wrote:
“We want to ensure that we have as comprehensive a picture as possible of the risks and opportunities that AI presents specifically to [the media and creative] sectors.”
Also, the UK government is working on an AI regulation white paper. And the country is all set to organize the world’s first global summit on AI regulation in November.
With its intention to become a world leader in artificial intelligence, the UK has allocated £100 million ($127 million) for purchasing AI chips. The size of these investments are alarming the creative sector, which fears AI will be prioritized over them
The UK government clarified:
“AI creates opportunities to maximize the potential of our creative industries and media sector, but we know it also presents risks.
We want to take a balanced approach that helps secure the UK’s position as a world leader in AI, while protecting our thriving creative sectors.”
While the media industry has raised concerns with the government, in the US, Hollywood is also protesting against AI developments.
Despite the protests, the AI industry is forecast to exceed a valuation of $1.7 trillion by 2030. AI currently has a global market value of $207 billion.
