GT, short for GateToken, is the native cryptocurrency of Gate.io, a platform and ecosystem that includes an exchange, a blockchain, and many other products and features. Here’s everything to know about the incentive-laden token in 2025.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
➤ GateToken (GT) is the native token of the Gate.io ecosystem, used for paying fees, staking, and unlocking exclusive benefits.
GT’s value is supported by a burn mechanism that reduces supply, ensuring scarcity and long-term growth.
GT has a fixed maximum supply of 300 million tokens, with over 58% already burned.
GT combines scarcity-driven value, a high float, and ecosystem benefits, making it attractive for both users of Gate.io and GateChain.

What is GateToken (GT)?

GateToken is the native utility token used for the Gate.io exchange and GateChain. It functions similarly to how ETH (Ether) does to Ethereum. If you’re not already aware, Gate.io is a global cryptocurrency exchange and the developer of GateChain. The platform is popular for its market depth and many crypto-native products, which include:

  • A startup launchpad
  • Meme Innovation Zone
  • HODL & Earn
  • Copy Trading
  • Trading Bots
  • GateChain

GateChain is an EVM-compatible blockchain where you can use the GT token and has unique features like transaction rollbacks and asset protection.

GT debuted in 2019 and was adopted as Gate’s official platform token on March 2, 2020. Notably, GT’s launch occurred without a private token sale, ICO (initial coin offering), or any institutional funding.

How does GT Token work?

GateToken is a standard ERC-20 token. It has three primary uses:

  1. Paying gas and transaction fees.
  2. Staking.
  3. Trading rebates and exclusive benefits on Gate.io.

Gas and transaction fees

You can use GT to pay fees on the GateChain network, including fees for any decentralized applications (DApps) built on top of it.

Staking

Like Ethereum, GateChain is proof-of-stake (PoS) and allows you to stake GT. Users can take advantage of native staking yields up to 10%. Gate.io facilitates this feature.

GT’s use cases on the Gate.io platform

Similarly to how you can use GT to pay for gas and transaction fees on-chain, you can also use it to pay for services on the exchange.

Gate uses a tiered fee structure called a VIP level. To put it simply, the higher your trading volume or account balance, the lower your fees are. For example:

  • VIP 1: Hold 100 GT
  • VIP 2: Hold 500 GT
  • VIP 3: Hold 1,000 GT

You can enjoy fee discounts on products like spot trading, leverage trading, futures, wealth management, and lending. Holders receive up to 50% discounts on transaction fees when paying with GT.

Holding GT on Gate.io has a plethora of other benefits as well. In addition to boosting your VIP level, which gives you trade fee discounts, holding GT entitles you to startup airdrops, dedicated customer service, and exclusive events.

GT holders receive early access to new project subscriptions on the Startup platform, as well as participation in GT-exclusive airdrops and investment opportunities.

Hodlers can also participate in token mining for new projects launched on the Startup platform, which offers the opportunity to earn profits once the project is listed.

GT tokenomics

GateToken has a fixed supply capped at 300,000,000 GT. As stated previously, the token was launched in 2019, but with an initial supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens.

This supply was later burned and reduced to the current maximum supply. Out of the remaining 300,000,000 GT:

  • 10% is frozen.
  • Over 58% has been burnt.
  • About 32% of this GT is actually in circulation.

Gate.io uses 15% of its business profits from crypto to crypto, margin, and futures trading to buy back and burn GT. Another 5% of its profits go to GT research and development.

This puts the total profit put into buybacks and burning GT at 20%, which is adjusted every four years depending on market and industry conditions.

The official reserve of Gate.io holds 30,000,000 GT, which is permanently frozen as an insurance fund. It can only be used for token burns.

Burn mechanism

GT’s burning mechanism is a core driver of its value. Consistently burning GT reinforces its scarcity and bolsters its value, which is advantageous for holders. This model is similar to BNB, where burning supports a deflationary mechanism ensuring long-term growth and sustainability.

All burn records for GT are publicly available and verifiable on-chain. The first burn occurred on Aug. 27, 2019; 19,467,230 GT were burned initially.

How to get GT

There are three primary ways to acquire GT:

  • Purchasing it on the Gate.io spot market.
  • Running a node on GateChain.
  • Obtaining it through delegated PoS on GateChain.

While running a node is outside of the scope of this guide, purchasing GT on Gate.io is relatively straightforward. To purchase GT on Gate.io, simply do the following:

  1. Create an account on Gate.io.
  2. KYC.
  3. Deposit or fund your account.
  4. Create an order for GT.

Should you invest in GT?

Whether or not you decide to invest in GT is entirely up to you. You should always do your own research, invest wisely, and never use more money than you can comfortably afford to lose. However, there are a few key pieces of information you may want to keep in mind before investing in GT.

Firstly, GT launched with a price of $0.30-$0.50. During the crypto boom of 2021, this price skyrocketed past $5, marking a more than 10x increase. However, this growth staggered at the onset of the crypto winter in 2022. In 2024, GT reached an all-time high of over $17 and has since continued to hold its value above previous cycles.

Additionally, GateToken has a high float and a comparatively low, fully diluted valuation. In other words, the circulating supply and price of GT are relatively low compared to most tokens, and no more tokens are expected to be issued.

This creates a preferable situation for holders where the token has the potential to appreciate in price due to a limited supply and the lack of newly issued tokens to issue and dilute the price of the current circulating supply held by traders.

This means GT differs from many crypto exchange tokens, which have an inflated supply and a low value per token. Holders of these tokens typically benefit from trading rebates but not much else.

Lastly, as previously mentioned, holding GT has many benefits beyond price appreciation. Given the scarcity-driven value, transparency of the burning mechanism, low risk of dumping, and ecosystem support, it is easy to see the value in holding GT, particularly for Gate.io users.

GT: Equitable tokenomics favoring everyday traders

Overall, GT’s scarcity-driven value proposition, fair launch, and tokenomics are more advantageous for holders than many similar token launches that favor venture capitalists. Whether you are trading on Gate.io or creating transactions on GateChain, you are sure to find some use for the GT token.

Do note however that while the token is utility packed, its integration with Gate.io means that GT’s price is heavily linked to the performance and reputation of the platform. Just as BNB’s value dropped upon news of problems at Binance and with the CEX’s leadership, the same would likely happen to GT should any negative sentiment around Gate.io arise.
