Elon Musk has launched an independent venture to tackle ChatGPT creator OpenAI. The company falls under the “X” brand.

Elon Musk’s xAI Wants to ‘Understand Reality’

Musk has described the goal of xAI as “to understand reality.” The xAI website reads that“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe.”

Team members on xAI include former employees of OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and DeepMind. The company will collaborate with Twitter, Tesla, and others.

Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI, which launched in 2015. In 2018, he relinquished his position from OpenAI to avoid a conflict of interest with Tesla. He has spoken about launching “TruthGPT,” a rival to ChatGPT.

Musk tweeted about Twitter being “X” in April, aiming to make Twitter an everything app in the way WeChat operates in China.

Twitter, on paper, doesn’t exist anymore, having merged with X Corp. This umbrella of companies includes Tesla and the newly launched xAI. The first company that Musk was involved with, PayPal, was initially called X.com.

Musk vs. Zuck: The Fight Everyone Wants

Musk is often in the headlines for one reason or the other, but one of the more notable developments in recent times was a cage fight between himself and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

What seemingly started as a joke appears to have become more serious.

Zuckerberg has been training with UFC middleweight champions Israel Adesanya and featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Zuckerberg himself knows Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Musk has also been training with UFC legend Georges St. Pierre, mixed martial arts coach John Danaher and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Lex Fridman.

However, Musk’s mother intervened, saying that the fight had been canceled.

Twitter Quickly Tumbling As Lawsuits Arrive

While Elon Musk has decided to launch OpenAI competitor xAI, Twitter has been tanking by a variety of metrics. Traffic on the website has fallen since the start of the year but took a particularly strong hit this month.

DNS rankings show Twitter at 32 in January 2023, and it is now around 40. Meanwhile, Threads reached 100 million uses in under a week. Twitter has threatened to sue Meta over Threads.

Twitter has also been besieged with lawsuits. The latest is a $500 million lawsuit alleging that the company refused to pay severance packages to fired employees.

Twitter is also facing another legal challenge that claims that it refused to take down antisemitic and racist tweets after being notified.

The social media platform also made headlines after a Taliban official said that it was a better platform than Threads for free speech. It raised some headlines from the general public, who have chided Musk for his remarks on free speech.
