Dyson Ending Development of its Electric Car Battery, Reinvesting in Other Projects

More specifically, Dyson was looking to build an electric car a la Tesla, reports ArsTechnica. However, the project ended up costing the company too much, and it will be killing off the project. Mr. James Dyson, Founder of the company in his same name, had said years ago, in 2017, that his company would be looking into building an electric car battery. Back then, Dyson had been willing to put in over $3 billion to bring this project to life. It appeared to be a natural transition, with the company moving over its expertise in small, electric devices over to bigger ones: car batteries. The plan was for this battery to release in 2021, and was being built in Singapore. But, Dyson recently sent over an email to employees working on the project, noting the opposite. “The Dyson Automotive team have developed a fantastic car,” the email starts. He continues, stating that there is no way they can make it “commercially viable,” however. Dyson goes on to reassure the team that it’s nobody’s fault. This isn’t the result of a badly designed car or that the team performed badly, but rather because Dyson simply cannot find a buyer. So, he and the board are closing the project and moving that money into other ones, such as a new University that they are launching. Of course, the company will be absorbing as many employees as it can that will no longer be working on the car battery. Fortunately for the company, not all is lost. After all, that research they put into this new battery can still go into improving Dyson’s other projects, like the vacuum that made it famous.
