Kaspersky researchers have detected a recently identified malicious software circulating within the Apple Mac ecosystem. This threat runs through pirated applications and specifically aims to compromise the digital wallets of MacOS users who hold cryptocurrency.
“It doesn’t just steal crypto wallets; it replaces a wallet application with its own infected version,” the report warns.
Kaspersky Warns Mac Users Holding Crypto
In a recent statement, Kaspersky Researchers warns that Mac users must be on extra alert with downloading content from websites, especially those who hold crypto on digital wallets:
“Users should be extra cautious, especially with their cryptocurrency wallets. Avoid downloading from suspicious sites and use trusted cybersecurity solutions for better protection.”
Furthermore, it noted that this particular malware is targeting users using MacOS versions 13.6 and above.
Upon download, the malicious script examines a Mac for crypto wallet applications, replacing them with its own infected version.
According to Chainalysis, malware, while having the potential for illicit cryptocurrency activities, is surpassed by scams, sanctioned entities, and stolen funds.
However, ransomware, is often seen on Chainalysis’ yearly graphs, typically restricts computer system access until a crypto payment is made.
