Digital art superstar Mike Winkelmann, who goes by the moniker âBeeple,â is auctioning off a non-fungible token (NFT) to support the Open Earth Foundation.
The NFT artwork is titled âOCEAN FRONTâ. It features an image of trailers and shipping containers sitting atop a platform on the water.
The image is a part of Beepleâs âEVERYDAYSâ series. It contains themes of environmental sustainability, the climate crisis, and lowering the carbon footprint. It includes a caption that reads, âtogether we can solve this.â
Carbon Neutral NFT Art
The carbon-neutral NFT is up for auction on the Nifty Gateway marketplace. The proceeds will go directly to the Open Earth Foundation. Seven other nature-oriented NFTs from other artists are also being auctioned off as a part of the âCarbon Dropâ initiative.
At the time of press, the high bid on the âOCEAN FRONTâ piece stands at over $1.5 million. Bids across all eight Carbon Drop NFTs currently total $1.75 million. The auctions will conclude on March 23.
The Open Earth Foundation is a non-profit organization that is;
âraising funds to develop innovative open digital infrastructure for improved management of planet Earth â helping track transparently the global progress on the Paris Agreement to avoid the existential risk of climate change.â
Beeple Rises to Fame
Although he has been creating artwork every day for more than ten years, Beeple only recently became widely recognized in the mainstream.
He famously sold off an NFT mosaic of all of his art in an auction hosted by Christieâs. The piece was purchased for a staggering $69 million by a semi-anonymous collector known as Metakovan.
NFT popularity has exploded in 2021. Artists, celebrities, musicians, and sports stars have all been taking advantage of the mania.
NBA Top Shot NFTs have seen the most success. All-time sales have reached $416 million according to CryptoSlam. The Ethereum-based CryptoPunks characters have also surged in value. There have been more than $173 million sold with a record $7.8 million single sale for Crypto Punk #7804.
