Two British teens face prosecution for allegedly hacking into Nvidia, Grand Theft Auto (GTA), Revolut, and Uber. Investigators tracked them through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and online activities.
While some prodigy teenagers are founding startups and building businesses, some involve themselves in unethical activities like hacking.
UK Teenagers Allegedly Hacked Nvidia and Demanded Ransom
According to Bloomberg, two UK teenagers are facing trial for “serious computer misuse, blackmail and fraud against BT Group Plc, and Nvidia.”
The 17-year-old teenager’s name cannot be mentioned due to legal restrictions. While the restrictions on naming his 18-year-old partner, Arion Kurtaj, were lifted this week.
The prosecutors claim that the teenage hackers are associated with the infamous hacking group Lapsus$.
According to prosecutors, the teenage hackers stole around one terabyte (TB) of sensitive data from the chipmaker Nvidia. Subsequently, they released some of the data online and threatened the company, stating that they would release the rest unless the ransom money were provided.
Similarly, they demanded ransom money from BT Group, a British telecoms company. The teenage hackers also conducted SIM swap frauds to steal crypto.
The 17-year-old hacker pleaded guilty to two BT Group-related charges but maintained a not guilty plea for the remaining charges.
British Teens Flaunted Hacks
The investigators tracked down teenage hackers through their IP addresses. Their online flexing about the hacks helped escalate the investigations. Prosecution lawyer Kevin Barry said:
“Kurtaj is highly competent and a genius, but he’s a teenage lad, and he can’t resist bragging.”
Indeed, Kurtaj must be highly competent for hacking into the system of Rockstar Games, the creators of the GTA series. Usually, such big tech giants have high security standards to avoid data leakage.
Kurtaj stole sensitive code and videos of the latest GTA series installment from Rockstar Games. And he also hacked into Revolut and Uber last year while on bail for other charges.
