Topps has announced they will be rolling out their first NFT baseball card collection later this April.

Topps is a leading producer of sports trading cards. It has been reported that they are going digital. The sale of Topps first NFT baseball cards goes live on April 20th. The first-ever Topps baseball card collection to be released on a blockchain.

The collection, officially titled The 2021 Topps Series 1 Baseball NFT, will pay homage to its first annual flagship baseball card deck. It will feature iconic artwork with digital enhancements and animated backdrops.

This NFT will be available on the Worldwide Asset Platform (WAX) blockchain platform. Topps first used the WAX platform to release their Garbage Pail Kids collectibles earlier this year.

The first wave will consist of 50,000 standard packs, each containing six cards for $5. There will also be approximately a further 24,000 premium packs, which offer 45 cards for $100.

Furthermore, Topps has announced they will award the first 10,000 users who sign up for email alerts with a free “exclusive Topps MLB Opening Day NFT Pack.”

NFTs and Trading Cards

Topps Baseball Card NFT is not the first digital card collection to make its way onto a blockchain. Way back in December, it was revealed that digital trading cards inspired by the British sci-fi series Doctor Who was coming to Ethereum. The NFTs were made to play the Doctor Who: Worlds Apart digital trading card game. There was even a pre-sale event in which players could purchase packs of the NFT trading cards via the official website.

Other NFT trading card collections include Mutant Warriors, created by Simone Arena. Arena was an official artist for Topps, working on artwork for the aforementioned Garbage Pail Kids and other collections. Mutant Warriors is powered by EOS Amsterdam, a founding block producer for the EOS mainnet.

Meanwhile, the Topps baseball NFT has been compared to the NBA Top Shot, whose sales have surpassed $511 million. Top Shot NFTs are purchasable video clips of basketball moments. In February, one of these NFTs sold for over $200,000.
