ZachXBT, a well-known blockchain investigator, has revealed that he helped the US government recover a substantial portion of $20 million stolen in a hack. However, he received no reward for his efforts.
The disclosure came in response to a discussion on X (formerly Twitter) about his dedication to the crypto industry and his limited financial rewards for his work.
Support for ZachXBT Amid Compensation Concerns
ZachXBT’s revelation followed a comment by Micki, a crypto enthusiast. The user described him as the busiest person in crypto for the next four years, amid expectation of increased scams. The user expressed hope that he would be compensated well for his efforts.
“When the US government got hacked for $20 million a few months ago, I helped recover a sizable amount of those funds. Was rewarded zero for that. I just have many examples like this,” the blockchain sleuth shared.
Despite his critical contributions to the crypto space, ZachXBT admitted that financial gain has not been a priority in his investigative work.
The blockchain sleuth has played a vital role in uncovering major scams and holding bad actors accountable. Notably, his efforts led to the arrest of two hackers responsible for a $243 million crypto heist, as his on-chain investigations enabled authorities to trace and apprehend the perpetrators.
ZachXBT has also exposed complex schemes, including fraudulent meme coin operations. For example, he identified an individual operating 16 X accounts to promote meme coins deceitfully and uncovered a trader named Murad, linked to 11 crypto wallets.
While his work has saved millions of dollars and helped rebuild trust in the crypto industry, his lack of financial reward highlights a broader issue: the reliance on independent investigators who often work without institutional backing or compensation.
In response, discussions about fair compensation for such efforts have gained momentum. Joey Moose, a prominent Pudgy Penguin NFT holder, initiated a fundraising campaign for ZachXBT, sharing Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana wallet addresses to collect donations in support of his invaluable work.
“Dude does nothing but help. If you made tons of money this week, consider sending something for good karma,” Moose said.
This proposition appeared genuine. However, several users on X deemed it suspicious, given that ZachXBT already has a public donation address on his X account.
“The ultimate crime would be you keeping the funds, trying to wash them and Zach investigating it,” Azuki NFT community researcher Wale Moca quipped.
Indeed, ZachXBT’s work comes at a time of increasing crypto scams and hacks. In the latest, bad actors attempted to float a new meme coin inspired by Donald and Melania Trump’s son, Barron.
“The Official Barron Meme is live! You can buy Barron now,” the post read.
The post has since been taken down shortly after community members called it out as a scam. Still, with upwards of 1.1 million followers, the announcement turned heads. The interest drew mainly from the recently launched TRUMP and MELANIA meme coins.
