US Military Looks to Secure Its Communication Lines with Blockchain

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is actively investigating potential uses for blockchain technology in its communication lines. It hopes to secure them to render them unhackable by foreign adversaries.

Research into the benefits of blockchain technology is being done by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a division of the Department of Defense (DoD). The U.S. military hopes to stay ahead of the military curve and see clear potential in blockchain technology’s many use-cases.

Recently, the DoD released a report titled DoD Digital Modernization Strategize which outlines certain ways to “advance our digital environment to afford… a competitive advance in the modern battlespace.” One major focus of the report was blockchain, which the DoD argues allows for “more efficiency, robust, and secure platforms” for secure messaging. DARPA will expand on these conclusions in its own research. If approved, blockchain would largely be used for communications between the Pentagon and intelligence officers. The DoD is especially enthusiastic about this emerging technology since it is completely trustless, transparent, and secure. Moreover, any hacking attempts can be traced back. However, blockchain is not the only technology on the research agenda. AI, the Internet of Things, quantum computing, hyper-converged networking, and big data are all topics of interest for both the DoD and DARPA. In today’s digital battlefield, much of the conflicts occur in cyberspace. Every day, U.S. state facilities and computers are bombarded with threats from China, Russia, and other adversaries, sometimes organized by these governments themselves. The recent cyber-attacks on major U.S. cities like Baltimore by rogue hacking groups have demonstrated that the U.S. may incur serious damages if they do not modernize. We likely won’t receive an official confirmation when blockchain technology is actually implemented by the U.S. military. However, given these research inquiries into the technology, it seems all but certain it will be soon.
