Nearly three in four tokens that ever entered crypto’s Top 100 are operationally dead, according to new CryptoRank data.

The findings suggest market-cap rankings offer little protection, as most tokens that reach crypto’s upper tier lose relevance within a few years.

Most Top 100 Crypto Tokens Die Within Five Years

The firm analyzed 1,539 tokens and found 71.9% are “classified as operationally dead.” CryptoRank counted a token as dead once major exchanges delisted it and daily volume stayed below $10,000 for over 90 days.

Its analysis showed that 62% of top-100 tokens “die” within five years, with the estimated mortality rate rising to 84.7% after a decade and to 91.5% in 12 years. Meanwhile, the median lifespan of a top-100 token was just two years and four months.

“The key conclusion: reaching the Top 100 does not guarantee long-term potential,” CryptoRank stated in a post on X.

Ethereum Killers Lead the Casualties

A separate CryptoRank analysis tracked the Top 100 from July 2021. Only 41 projects held their spot, 46 fell out, and 13 ceased operations entirely. The dropouts lost a median 93% of their market value.

Roughly 65% of the fallen were Layer-1 and Layer-2 chains once billed as Ethereum (ETH) challengers. In contrast, stablecoins doubled their Top 100 presence from eight to 16.

The wider market looks worse. CoinGecko research shows 53.2% of all cryptocurrencies tracked on GeckoTerminal have stopped trading, and 11.6 million tokens failed in 2025 alone.

The data reframes a Top 100 ranking as a moment of visibility rather than proof of durability. Which of today’s leaders will still trade by 2031 remains an open question.
