Six Asia-Pacific Companies Donate ¥90 Million to Teach Students About Blockchain

The Ethereum Foundation will provide information-based support throughout the entirety of the course — as documented by Sumitomo Mitsui, one of the participating companies.

The University has been financed with ¥90 million, or approximately US$800.000, in donations from these companies — an amount which will be used to develop the course and keep it on campus for three years.

The six financing companies are:

• Good Luck Three Co., Ltd.
• JSS Corporation
• Zipper
• Hotlink Co., Ltd.
• Money Forward Inc.
• Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc

Students will receive in-depth knowledge about how blockchain technologies stack on both the application and protocol layers and will have the opportunity to build their own systems. The goal of the course is to educate students more than just about blockchain, however. There are plans to include entrepreneurship and management as part of the course.

The structure and curriculum are still pending, but academics at the university are hard at work performing the research necessary in order to create a compelling and effective course for students. The plan is to keep growing and expanding the course — most likely with the help of students.

Students attending this course will receive education about blockchain systems, conduct research, and actively develop blockchain solutions. The university has set forth some specifications — the student’s work aims to develop a public blockchain solution, and that said solution should be compatible with businesses.

Whether they succeed or not, one thing is certain — the students will receive a skillset that will benefit them for years to come. As part of the course, exceptionally gifted students that are willing to create a startup may receive donations.
