Alongside the news that Sony has officially announced its PlayStation 5 console, there is also a patent regarding PSVR 2 – the second iteration of its console-based virtual reality headset from this generation.
This news comes to us via Let’s Go Digital, who discovered a patent that saw approval on October 3rd. While there’s no official name for it as of now, the patent describes something called a “data processing device.” That, and there are images that quite obviously lend themselves to the VR design Sony had with its original offering. PlayStation 5 According to the images, Sony appears to be pulling inspiration from its competitors this time around, such as the Oculus Rift S, which doesn’t require any attachment to a computer. This is noticeable due to the cameras that sit both on the front and back of the headset, alongside the camera attached to the controller as well. The diagram also showcases the PlayStation Move camera that came with the first iteration. The more cameras, the better the tracking while a user is playing in virtual reality. Earlier generation headsets could suffer from misplaced movements that could screw up a player’s experience if they’re playing a high-paced game. Sony PSVR In a world where we have the Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive, and the Valve Index, the PlayStation VR was definitely a weaker choice when it came to virtual reality headsets. Sure, the device was cheaper than the others, and fit the neutered console experience that comes with playing on something aside from a PC, but the screen was always blurrier at a lower resolution and the Move controllers didn’t include as many features as competitors did. Now, Sony has a chance to stand up against the other headsets, and hopefully at a competitive price if they hope to entice more gamers over to their virtual space. What do you think about a potential PSVR 2? Would you be picking it up alongside your PlayStation 5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
