Meta has announced the launch of Purple Llama, an umbrella project designed to foster responsible development within the open generative AI model sector.

Purple Llama aims to address concerns surrounding AI cybersecurity and safeguards.

Meta Intends For Purple Llama to Increase Cybersecurity Measures

In a recent statement, Meta explains that the color purple, borrowed from the cybersecurity world, symbolizes a holistic approach to mitigating challenges in the generative AI space.

Furthermore, termed “Purple teaming,” the initiative combines both offensive (red team) and defensive (blue team) strategies for collaborative risk evaluation.

However, the statement notes that initially, Purple Llama will provide tools and evaluations focused on cybersecurity, including metrics to quantify cybersecurity risk. Additionally, it will provide tools to assess insecure code suggestions and mechanisms to make it harder for LLMs to generate malicious code or aid in cyber attacks.

Meta claims that these benchmarks, aligned with industry standards, seek to reduce the frequency of insecure AI-generated code.

Additionally, the project introduces Llama Guard, an openly available foundational model supporting input and output safeguards.

Results Will Be Transparent For Further Development

Meanwhile, Meta states this model enables developers to filter and check inputs and outputs in line with content guidelines.

However, the results are transparently shared for improvement and customization. Meta claims this will ultimately contribute to a safer and more responsible AI ecosystem.

Meta declares that Purple Llama will encourage collaboration among developers and standardize trust and safety tools for generative AI.

Building on the success of Llama 2, Meta is partnering with industry giants such as AWS, Google Cloud, IBM, Microsoft, and others to ensure a collective effort in creating a responsibly developed, open, generative AI environment.
