Google workers have recently accused the company of using a new tool for spying on their gatherings, likely in fear of protests. Meanwhile, Google and Alphabet continue to deny all such claims.
Ever since it was launched, Google has been accused of spying on everyone. Today, being one of the largest and wealthiest tech companies in the world, Google started receiving the same accusations from its own employees.
The company rolled out something which it claims is a tool for combating spam. However, its workers seem to fear that there must be more to it than that, as they publicly accused the firm of disguising a surveillance tool and rolling it out as a calendar extension, in hopes of spying on large gatherings of its employees.
The accusation also states that the company’s high-ranking employees are guilty of severe unethical conduct. They allegedly ordered a team of developers to create such a tool and install it on employees’ machines for monitoring their activity. The tool supposedly reports any attempt to create a calendar invite and send it to a large group of other workers, which might be the firm’s way of combating activism among its own employees.
The tool’s presence was allegedly discovered in September of this year when employees started noticing it and becoming concerned. Then, earlier this month, they started openly discussing the tool with others when they realized that it cannot be removed and that it is being installed forcibly.
As expected, Google and its parent company, Alphabet, continue to deny all accusations, claiming that the project is still in the works and that it is undergoing various tests. However, with the relationship between Google and its employees deteriorating over the years, many do not believe this explanation. Google has also had a number of internal controversies, such as the way it handles sexual harassment, among others.
So, employees have been creating an activist coalition within the company, which started in 2016. Apparently, Google has recently started to become troubled by its presence, which might explain a surveillance app, if that is what it really is.
What do you think about this? Is Google spying on its employees, or is it all just a misunderstanding? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.
