The FTX bankruptcy saga, which has ensnared over a million investors, may soon see a ray of hope.

The estate’s goal is to kick off reimbursements by late 2024. This plan emerged from a recent gathering of FTX Digital’s Joint Official Liquidators in the Bahamas. They are navigating through a dual bankruptcy process in the United States and the Bahamas.

FTX Aligns Bankruptcy, Liquidation for Creditor Ease

The unraveling of FTX, prompted by the financial misdeeds of co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried, left many in despair. Yet, the bankruptcy proceedings, involving Chapter 11 in Delaware and official liquidation in the Bahamas, are now aligned. They share the aim of initiating interim distributions to creditors with verified claims by the end of next year.

The initial shock of FTX’s downfall had many investors like Louis D’Oringy fearing the worst. However, he and others have since found a reason for cautious optimism. They believe not all funds were lost to fraud. This optimism has grown, as evidenced by the trading activity on Claims Market. Initially, claims traded at a fraction of their value. Now, some fetch up to 93% of their original worth.

D’Oringy himself has bought over $29 million worth of FTX claims at a purchase price of $3.5 million.

“My view was that Sam didn’t have enough time to perpetrate this fraud and to lose every single dollar. I was pretty convinced that they would be able to claw back a lot of money,” D’Oringy said.

This increase in claim value ties back to the rising cryptocurrency prices and significant asset sales, such as Anthropic’s shares selling for over $880 million. Some insiders even believe claims could surpass their initial values, potentially reaching up to 140%.

Sam Bankman-Fried, meanwhile, has faced justice for his role in the debacle. Judge Kaplan sentenced him to 25 years in prison, denouncing his deceitful conduct and witness tampering. Despite his defense team’s efforts to paint him in a sympathetic light, the sentence underscores the severity of his actions against FTX clients and investors.

As the FTX bankruptcy estate moves forward, creditors hold onto the hope of recouping their losses. This marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing story of cryptocurrency exchanges.
