Local authorities arrested Badiss Mohamed Amide Bajjou, a Franco-Moroccan man accused of masterminding the spree of French crypto kidnappings, in Tangier. This follows the arrest of 25 lower-level gang members.

However, some sources report that another mastermind remains at large in Morocco. Moreover, these violent kidnappings are becoming a global trend, and copycats may continue even after this gang’s destruction.

Will French Crypto Kidnappings Finally End?

The recent spree of French crypto kidnappings has caused a huge scandal, forcing national authorities to tighten their security measures.

As of yesterday, 25 suspects had been arrested and charged, and their ages ranged from 16 to 23. Today, however, Moroccan authorities made a breakthrough, arresting Bajjou in Tangier.

“I sincerely thank Morocco for this arrest, which demonstrates excellent judicial cooperation between our two countries, particularly in the fight against organised crime,” claimed Gérald Darmanin, France’s Minister of Justice.

French authorities put out an Interpol red notice against Bajjou, accusing him of “arrest, kidnapping, false imprisonment or arbitrary detention of a hostage.”

Law enforcement directly identified him as the mastermind of David Balland’s kidnapping, but it does not mention a concrete connection to other recent incidents. Still, they believe it was all one organization.

Still, some French news outlets reported that the 24-year-old Bajjou is not the group’s only leader. Le Parisien claimed that police suspect another key member remains at large, another Franco-Moroccan man in his forties.

Allegedly, he and Bajjou operated from Morocco, recruiting French youngsters to carry out the actual attacks.

Even if this theory is true, both of these countries are hunting for the remaining suspect. It seems like the vast majority of his gang members are in custody, creating ample opportunities for police to turn one of them into an informant.

The important question, then, is whether or not the destruction of this kidnapping gang will stop the French crime spree. These crimes are becoming a worldwide phenomenon, with brutal kidnappings taking place in Argentina and the United States.

If copycats continue attempting these brazen attacks, the problem will become much trickier to manage.
