Billions of football fans worldwide will soon manage their FIFA digital collectibles on a dedicated blockchain. FIFA, the global governing body for football, plans to build a layer-1 blockchain on the Avalanche network.

The upcoming migration of FIFA Collect to a new blockchain, created with Avalanche and Modex, marks a strategic update in FIFA’s digital approach. This shift promises to redefine fan engagement and transform the experience of owning digital memorabilia.

FIFA Collectibles Enter a New Blockchain Age

FIFA’s alliance with Avalanche brings a custom Layer-1 blockchain purpose-built for digital collectibles. This step supports scalability, strong security, and a superior user experience for the expanding FIFA Collect platform.

“Rumors are true. The FIFA Blockchain is built as a new layer 1 on Avalanche,” Avalanche announced on X on Thursday.

An official Avalanche blog post details the vision for a football-centric Layer 1 blockchain engineered for high throughput and the support of varied digital assets. According to the FIFA Collect Migration FAQ, FIFA Collect’s migration was planned for after May 20.

As the inaugural application on the new chain, the FIFA Collect platform hosts football-themed NFTs and experiences. Regular digital drops highlight legendary moments, famous players, and global club partnerships, as displayed on the FIFA Collect Drops Page.

Strategic Collaboration: Avalanche and Modex’s Roles

To ensure a seamless transition, FIFA has brought in Modex as its infrastructure provider and technical developer. Modex is responsible for building the blockchain infrastructure and enhancing the FIFA Collect marketplace. The partnership marks a pivotal step in FIFA’s digital strategy.

This collaboration arrives as demand for sports digital assets grows. Migrating to a custom Avalanche network will help FIFA prepare for future innovations in digital collectibles. By leveraging Avalanche’s blockchain, FIFA’s digital offerings are poised to expand far beyond collectibles, connecting fans in engaging new ways.

This isn’t FIFA’s first foray into NFT and Web3. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, FIFA collaborated with multiple blockchain startups to release games and collectible apps.

Recently, Mythical Games and FIFA revealed plans for FIFA Rivals, an officially licensed mobile football game. As the studio told BeInCrypto, the game will have its own exclusive NFT marketplace. Players will be able to trade their favorite football stars as NFTs.
