An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a collection assets tracked inside an index. The most well-known such fund is the S&P 500 ETC, which tracks the S&P 500 index. Unlike mutual funds, ETF shares are traded on an exchange throughout the day. As of October 2019, there are not cryptocurrency ETF's listed on the United States, the closest being the Bitcoin Investment Trust (GBTC) which has several similarities to an exchange-traded fund. However, the GBTC has not been made available to mainstrem investors. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Comission (SEC) has not approved any cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, since it deems the market unstable and risky.
