The Argentina Football Association (AFA) has renamed their premier division of Football after fan token app Socios.com.
The highest league of Argentinian football is getting a new sponsor and with it, a new name. Formerly named the Primera Division, the league is Argentina’s top league and has been around for over 100 years. Now, the league has signed a deal with Chiliz, creators of the Socios.com fan engagement app to rebrand the entire league. Now named the Torneo Socios.com starting the 2021-22 season. Torneo in Spanish means tournament so translated the league is the Tournament Socious.com.
The league is one of the most storied domestic leagues in the world, it is also by far one of the oldest. The Torneo Socios.com was the first association football league to form anywhere outside the United Kingdom and has been playing games ever since 1891.
President of the AFA, Claudio Tapia, said that “We are very happy to kick off this journey with Socios.com. It is a very important agreement, since it’s the first time the Argentinian league partners with a commercial brand to rename the tournament. We’ve been partners of Socios.com for some time now with the Argentinian National Team. This new agreement will strengthen our relationship and have a very positive impact on both parties.”
Socios.com and Argentina football
The agreement between the AFA and Chiliz was originally announced in May and brought the Argentinian National Football team to Socios.com. The partnership made Argentina the first national team in the world to debut a fan token on Socios. Com. The team promptly won the Copa America and launched their fan token in June.
Socios fan tokens are minted on the Chiliz $CHZ blockchain and function as collectible digital assets. The tokes allow whoever buys them exclusive access to VIP rewards, specific promotions, AR features and even voting rights in official team polls. Additional perks include game tickets and competitions with others on the Socios.com platform.
Chiliz has now grown to include more than 40 teams across the globe to partner up with and sell these tokens. Other major partners include FC Barca, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Valencia, and national teams from Argentina and Portugal. Recently, the company has been branching out from just international football teams so include Formula 1 teams, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and a number of cricket teams.
It seems the company is shifting its sights toward the Americas and has even signed deals with teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) and National Basketball Association (NBA).
