Anthropic’s cash and short-term investments reached $131.7 billion on June 30, topping Nvidia and Apple combined, per CNBC. Disclosed lease and spending obligations add up to about $587 billion.

Anthropic typically orders most of its compute, or computing power, 12 to 18 months before delivery. Claude runs on chips from Nvidia, Amazon, Google, and AMD, so their shareholders could hold exposure to the bills.

Does Anthropic’s Cash Cover Its Commitments?

Anthropic’s S-1 registration, filed Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), precedes its initial public offering (IPO). The filing lists $112.4 billion in cash and equivalents plus $19.3 billion in short-term investments.

CNBC and S&P Capital IQ data show only Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet ahead of Anthropic among non-bank U.S. companies.

However, the filing shows $321.4 billion in undiscounted obligations for leases not yet started. Fixed or guaranteed spending minimums add $265.6 billion.

Cash covers about 22% of that combined $587 billion. Still, terms run as long as 20 years, so payments arrive gradually.

Contracts signed or revised after June 30 carry roughly $245 billion in minimum payments. Anthropic has not shared an updated aggregate, CNBC reported.

Meanwhile, first-half revenue reached $16.3 billion. Anthropic posted a $693 million operating loss but $1.6 billion in adjusted operating income, a company-defined measure.

Its compute agreements include take-or-pay terms, the filing says, which require payment whether or not the capacity gets used.

Who Actually Receives the IPO Proceeds?

CNBC, citing reports that the offering could top $100 billion, says total cash could pass $230 billion. Yet existing investors are selling into the offering, so Anthropic will not collect all of it.

Anthropic receives nothing from those sales and plans to put its own proceeds toward general purposes, including compute.

Separately, Anthropic has applied to list on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol ANT. CNBC reported that offering details should arrive in about two weeks.

Some cloud suppliers also build their own artificial intelligence (AI) models, a conflict the filing flags as a risk. By comparison, obligations exceed Anthropic’s cash more than four times over. Revenue growth, fresh capital, or both would need to cover the gap through 2045.
