The United States is stepping up in its attempts to sabotage the efforts of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to build its 5G infrastructure. This time Washington is pressuring the United Kingdom to revoke Huawei’s 5G access.
American officials are preparing to make a final plea to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to stop the rollout of 5G across the country. Per the report, representatives of the US National Economic Council and National Security Agency will be meeting with members of the Johnson cabinet, hoping to use the meeting to convince them that Huawei’s suspected close ties to the Chinese state could put the lives and security of the British people at stake if the company is allowed to develop its 5G infrastructure.

Trade War Tactics in Play

The battle for 5G is bigger than the desire to be technology dominant. Since the trade war started, the United States and China have been locked in an economic battle for supremacy that has dragged on for close to two years now. However, given how much of a watershed development 5G is set to be in the tech space, both countries are currently doodling their best to ensure that they get there first. China is currently leading that foot race, but the Trump administration isn’t letting up just yet. With trade talks between the two parties are expected to begin within the next few weeks, there’s no doubt that each one will be looking to weaken the other party’s standing and gain as much leverage as they possibly can. Huawei Washington has thrown its weight around quite extensively, trying to convince allies in the developed world to reject Huawei’s 5G rollout within their borders. From threatening to ostracize countries to leverage on bilateral relations, the Trump administration has tried all it can to hit Huawei- and by extension, the Chinese government- where it hurts. In some cases- such as with Australia- this strong-arming has worked out. However, it’s not had the desired effect across the board. Major markets such as Germans and the U.K. have defied Trump, and are set to let Huawei continue with its 5G efforts in their territories.

The U.K is Quite Committed to 5G

In addition to the 5G implementation, Johnson is also said to be on the verge of allowing “limited involvement” from Huawei in building the next generation of mobile phones across the U.K., as he hopes to thaw the reliance of the country on just Ericsson and Nokia. Showing that the government will most likely move forward with the 5G plan, Andrew Parker, the head of British intelligence, told the Financial Times that he had no reason to believe the relationship with the U.S. would jeopardize the move. A final meeting between the National Security Council on the next steps is set to take place next week.
