American model and author Chrissy Teigen recently tweeted about Bitcoin to her 11.3 million followers. The former Sports Illustrated model said,
“Two things I do not understand and cannot be bothered to research to try: bitcoin and tiktok.”
The cryptocurrency community on Twitter, including evangelist Anthony Pompliano, promptly sent replies with offers to get her up and running with a Bitcoin wallet. Christine Teigen

Chrissy Teigen Doesn’t Get the Big Deal About Bitcoin

So far, over 7,000 people have retweeted Teigen’s confused statement, which also has close to 80,000 likes at the time of writing. While a few cryptocurrency naysayers joined the discussion, the vast majority of replies were supportive and encouraged Teigen to delve a little deeper into the Bitcoin rabbit hole. Morgan Creek Digital co-founder Anthony Pompliano also decided to join in the discussion at one point, offering Teigen his insight on the matter over Direct Messaging (DM) on Twitter. He concluded his tweet by saying that she could “go viral on Bitcoin twitter over and over again.” He was presumably referring to future social media endorsements that would attract the eye of mainstream media around the globe. In another tweet, Instagram influencer Branden Hampton offered to ‘teach’ her about Bitcoin in a short five-minute session. He then said he’d throw in some free Bitcoin (BTC) as an added bonus. Blockchain advocate and crypto expert Micheal Nye, meanwhile, explained the process of setting up a Bitcoin wallet in his own tweet. He then also offered to send some as a starting bonus. He concluded by saying that getting started with cryptocurrency is easy — that there is “no better way than that to start to understand the future of finance!” While the reception from Twitter’s cryptocurrency audience was certainly brimming with enthusiasm, the market at large seemed entirely unperturbed by the incident. Bitcoin was trading five percent lower on the week, at approximately $10,500 and altcoins dropped by even significantly higher percentages.

TikTok: A Common Denominator

In the same tweet, Teigen said that she doesn’t understand TikTok, a hugely popular app for creating and sharing short videos. TikTok’s official twitter handle chose to overlook that bit, and instead went for a bit of banter by replying,
“We don’t get Bitcoin either.”
Earlier this year, TikTok reached over one billion downloads on Android and iOS. In another tweet, Teigen admitted that she does “enjoy watching tiktoks,” but just can’t understand it at all. One of the replies attempted to explain anyway, stating,
“Tiktok is like a terribly addicting mix of YouTube + Vine.”
TikTok, the short-form video app, often referred to as the ‘lip-sync app,’ has seen unprecedented growth since it acquired its American rival Musical.ly in 2017. The purchase led to a merger of two apps’ user bases. In the past year, it even surpassed the number of app downloads of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Youtube.
