Fantasy football platform Sorare has signed a non-fungible token (NFT) partnership with Bundesliga. The pairing includes the first and second division teams of the German football league.

German football league Fußball-Bundesliga, or Bundesliga, announced it has become an official partner with fantasy NFT platform Sorare. Sorare says that the deal is “effective immediately” and will allow NFTs for Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 players to be created and sold until the 2022-23 season. The deal marks the second major football league to sign on with Sorare after LaLiga in September 2021. The platform also has north of 200 teams that have signed on to participate in the NFT fantasy game.

“The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world, home to some of the most exciting clubs and footballers on earth,” said Sorare CEO Nicolas Julia. He goes on to state that “we’re thrilled to allow Bundesliga fans in Germany and globally to come together online and to feel ownership of the sports they love.”

Sorare exploring different NFT options

The deal with Bundesliga will take Sorare in a slightly divergent direction from the traditional business model it has followed thus far. Sorare is a fantasy football platform that runs on NFTs. Instead of drafting a team each season or each week as in traditional fantasy sports, The platform requires that you buy packs of NFTs to collect player cards. Those cards can be collected, traded, or sold but, also function as your players in a fantasy football league. Winning in the game is rewarded by Sorare via Ethereum payouts. Now, with the new Bundesliga deal, Sorare says it will be branching out to offer video moments for certain matches as NFTs.

The move towards incorporating video is similar to how NBA Top Shot handles its NFT cards. Instead of static digital trading cards or even ones with animation, Top Shot cards feature real NBA video highlights. The Dapper Labs’ product is one of the biggest sports NFT platforms in the world.

Much like Top Shot, Sorare’s “NFT Moments” will feature moments from the team’s past along with highlights from the current roster. While the NFT partnership begins immediately, Sorare did say that the Bundesliga Moments NFTs won’t be released until 2022. Classic Sorare NFT cards featuring the league will, however, be available sooner. In addition to the NFT sets, the platform is offering users tickets giveaways and other VIP rewards.
