Beeple and the founder of Pitchfork have launched a new non-fungible token (NFT) platform to sell digital art commemorating iconic moments in history.

After breaking the internet at selling a piece of NFT art for $69 million, Beeple is back in the news announcing the launch of a new blockchain platform. The platform, called WeNew, allows artists to create NFTs to authenticate digital art as one-of-a-kind offers.

Pitchfork founder, Ryan Schreiber, will serve as the editor-in-chief of WeNew and will be tasked with curating the moments to be sold. The iconic moments will highlight the worlds of art, fashion, politics, and sports.

In the press release, Beeple stated his optimism on the NFT world. “NFTs represent a new paradigm, not just in how people can invest their money but in how we conceive of our shared experience and how we celebrate remarkable achievements.” Beeple goes on to talk about his belief that NFTs will give people a way to digitally engage with moments that matter to them.

The WeNew platform uses the Ethereum blockchain to offer NFTs in both single and multiple edition releases. The software also supports both auction formats and direct sales at any price point. The NFT digital art is only part of the buyer experience as WeNew’s website claims that buyers will experience a “comprehensive editorial experience” to complement each piece. The editorial experience is part of WeNew’s goal of offering deeper context and meaning for each digital piece sold on the platform.

Buyers will also be awarded a physical artifact to display their new purchase. A museum-quality screen will loop a video of the NFT to be shown off at the buyer’s discretion. Rounding out the perks, each sale will also include experiences related to each NFT. Experiences range from going head-to-head against a pro athlete or sitting down to dinner with one of the artists involved in the project.

WeNew partners with Wimbledon

The WeNew platform’s first auction contains NFTs designed in collaboration with Wimbledon. The initial sale, which begins July 2, will highlight Andy Murray’s 2013 Grand Slam win. The moment is historic because it ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a male singles champion. The winning bidder of the Andy Murray auction will not only win the NFT and display, but also the chance to knock the ball around with Murray on the court at Wimbledon.

A behind-the-scenes experience, autographed memorabilia. As well as a pair of tickets to the 2022 Wimbledon men’s final.

While the aforementioned package is the highlight of the auction, other NFTs will be offered for sale to tennis fans on a budget. NFTs in editions of 20, 50. 100 and 500 will also be auctioned off. Bids start at $49 and commemorate the moment Murray lifted his Grand Slam trophy during his post-win interview, his 2012 speech after finishing second, and a 2013 highlight reel.
