Facebook has ended up in another controversy this, and once again, the issue lies with its ad policies which have turned US democrats against the social media giant.
Facebook had quite a few scandals in 2018, and for a time, it seemed like the social media giant had cleaned up its act. However, this last weekend brought another wave of bad press for Facebook, and the issue once again lies with ads. Facebook actually managed to openly feud with a presidential candidate on another social media platform, Twitter. The controversy supposedly began after Facebook got flooded with fake ads spreading misinformation about Joe Biden, his family, and the Ukraine scandal. It is believed that these ads were brought by the Trump reelection campaign, which caused the Democrats to react. Elizabeth Warren exposed the platform, accusing it of being quick to approve even false and misleading ads as long as they come from politicians. Warren tested the theory by pushing a fake ad about Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, supposedly supporting Trump for 2020 reelection, with an image of the two shaking hands in the Oval Office. Warren posted on Twitter about this, stating that her team posted a false ad to see if it would be approved. Unsurprisingly enough, the ad was accepted rather quickly, and it started running on the platform. Warren then decided to go public with the issue, as Facebook holds great power when it comes to affecting elections. In fact, Facebook policies allow lying politicians to spread misinformation and damage the image of their adversaries, which is not something that truthful candidates would do. As a result, Democrats have decided to take on Facebook’s policies, and this time directly. Of course, Facebook is far from being the only platform with this problem, and it is actually the most transparent when it comes to ad policies. However, its officials did say that they do not send politicians’ speaks or ads to third parties for fact-checking, as the platform believes in free expression, and political speech is the most scrutinized speech there is. What do you think about Facebook’s new controversy? Do you think that its ads policies need changing? Leave a comment and let us know.
